ISS has formed a joint venture partnership with EQE International to undertake the HAZMAT Emergency Information System project for the Emergency Planning Unit of the Ministry of Environment. The project concerns the specification of a HAZMAT (hazardous materials) Emergency Information System (HEIS).

Technology: The system is expected to be based on a Geographical Information System, and will be used by emergency responders (police, civil defence force and medical services) at the site of emergency incidents by means of a Radio Frequency Network. The project also has requirements to incorporate real-time video information and video recording.

Impact: Government agencies involved in with hazardous emergency incidents require timely access to accurate and vital information on hazardous materials and their potential impact in order to minimise the consequences of an emergency situation. As such, HEIS will provide and manage such information including databases. In addition, HEIS will double up a center for information on poison where a database on the medical protocols can be incorporated.
