As the knowledge-based economy begins to take shape, financial institutions worldwide are trying to cope with many ongoing changes in their trading environment. These changes include deregulation, new compliance requirements, increased customer expectations and competition from new entrants to the industry. Such pressure for change, together with the urge to globalise operations, products and services have meant that financial services (FS) institutions are rapidly transitioning from (traditionally) product-focus strategies to services and market-oriented strategies. They have a great need for leveraging their global expertise as well as require, among other things, instantaneous consolidation of knowledge about their customers. Many FS organisations are turning to Knowledge Management (KM) to meet these challenges.

By identifying the agents of change in the industry, a framework is presented to better appreciate the major categories of KM applications deployed at FS institutions. A survey of case studies across countries has revealed that such applications include knowledge communities, portals, corporate taxonomies, Intellectual Capital (IC) measurement tools, competency mapping, expertise directories, expert systems, information capture and aggregation tools, customer KM, data mining, e-collaboration and e-Learning systems. These findings are further compared with other similar surveys reported in the industry. This presentation, based on research recently completed by CSC, concludes with critical issues and current trends in managing knowledge in the FS industry.
