Centres of Excellence

Smart Health Leadership Centre

Our Centres of Excellence provide unparalleled training and research opportunities for managers and professionals from all over the globe.

Launched in November 2015, the NUS-ISS Smart Health Leadership Centre was built to bring us a step closer to the smarter health systems of the future.

Through integrated training, cross-industry collaboration and research-driven design, its mission is to transform the way citizens and industry professionals experience health.

Innovating at the Smart Health Designathon

In partnership with Medtronic, the Smart Health Designathon saw 90 participants engage in design training bootcamps to create a one-of-a-kind community space for individuals managing chronic health conditions.

Over the three-week challenge, each group interviewed real patients to inform their design solutions, drawing upon expert innovation to perfect their final ideas. They then pitched these ideas to a diverse panel of expert healthcare and wellbeing representatives. The winning solution featured a mobile smart health café that tackles social isolation and chronic healthcare via a ‘health-by-stealth’ approach.

Establishing the Smart Health Community of Practice (CoP)

2016 was the year we established the Smart Health Community of Practice (CoP), encouraging health professionals from all backgrounds to jointly consider how we might transform the experience of health in the future.

With expert speakers from a diverse range of health sector industries and keen audience participation, we held five successful CoP events over the course of the year. These included Emerging Opportunities for Digital Mental Health; Revolutionising Primary Care; and Integrated Care in Singapore.

Collaborating with Galen Growth Asia

The Centre signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Galen Growth Asia, a connector company that collaborates with corporations, investors, hospitals and the government to develop sustainable healthtech solutions in Asia.

Over the past year, Galen Growth Asia has supported NUS-ISS through thought leadership events and initiatives to strengthen the healthtech industry in Singapore.

Galen Growth Asia’s mission is to build a vibrant healthtech ecosystem to support Asia’s unprecedented opportunity to leverage technology and improve patient outcomes. One key success factor is to enable promising teams with viable solutions to learn the skills required to grow their ventures. Therefore, Galen Growth Asia welcomes the opportunity to assist the NUS-ISS Smart Health Leadership Centre in defining a healthpreneurship programme during the course of 2017.

Designing a transformation blueprint for Alexandra Health System

We began working in partnership with Alexandra Health System (AHS) in 2014, designing a major transformation programme with the aim of streamlining the service delivery model for Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and developing a model of care for the north of Singapore.

In 2016, we continued our close collaboration with AHS by assisting with the development of pilots to test and the evolution of the transformation blueprint.

Launching the first Social Outcomes Measurement Framework in Singapore

In conjunction with SG Enable, we developed a core framework to measure the social outcomes of disability projects funded by the Tote Board – Enabling Lives Initiative (TB-ELI) Grant. It is the first framework of its kind in Singapore.

Over the next five years, we will be supporting initiatives for people with disabilities and their carers by helping project managers to better evaluate their support programmes, so as to maximise their impacts. This builds on our current bespoke training programme, which helps project managers to design more impactful programmes through the development of detailed delivery plans and powerful value propositions.

With a shared vision to enable and empower the social sector to articulate and measure their social impact, it was a pleasure working with NUS-ISS to pioneer these initiatives. Other than their extensive domain knowledge, the team was forthcoming and consultative in tailoring their offerings to meet the needs of the sector.

Hosting the ‘Health Policy and the Role of Data & Technology in Healthcare’ Programme

24 participants from around the world attended our first-ever ‘Health Policy and the Role of Data & Technology in Healthcare’ programme, delivered as part of the Singapore Cooperation Training Programme and sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

65% of participants rated the course as ‘excellent’, with the remaining participants rating is as ‘very good’.

Excellent assistance programme. Your profound hospitality and commitment in academics is much appreciated. This is a well-planned and executed programme. We came to know about new tools we can use to improve our healthcare structure/delivery in the Maldives.

Director of Medical Administration, Ministry of Health, the Maldives

An excellent opportunity for learning and sharing. The course was well structured and the use of applied learning strategies allows maximum impact and value to me in positively impacting healthcare in Trinidad & Tobago.

Showcasing the first working model of the NEEURO mind training headset

To explore the possibilities of using digital technology in mental healthcare, our CoP showcased the first working model of the NEEURO mind training headset. An audience member was invited to put the headset to the test by controlling the movements of a game, displayed live on the auditorium screen, using nothing but the power of his mind.

Developed in Singapore by neuroscientists, the NEEURO headset is thought to help improve memory, spatial awareness, concentration, and cognitive flexibility.
