Configuration Management and Monitoring for Cloud DevOps

Overview

At the core of Cloud DevOps is the ability to establish configuration for automating machines and application deployment readily. It also involves setting up a reliable and scalable monitoring and logging system.

In this course, securing, provisioning and automation will progress from a small, simple and basic setup to building up to larger systems comprising a fleet of machines with clusters and nodes that require a more comprehensive and wider range of configuration management tools and practices. Interested candidates are required to complete the Python for Data, Ops and Things and Cloud DevOps Foundation course first.

To ensure the health of the established and operational environment, you will also learn how to implement basic alerts and monitoring of the infrastructure, while progressively picking up skills in advanced alerting and monitoring at the business-level for a large and dynamic fleet of servers in the cloud. Through log shippers and indexing as well as Dashboards for visualization, learners gain insight into their applications while exposing them to tools to debug production issues.

  • Introduction to Configuration Management and Monitoring
  • Install Ansible and write playbooks for setting up some packages/system settings
  • Introduction to Salt, where to use Salt and where to use Ansible
  • Writing some basic states in Salt to do what we did before with Ansible
  • Putting data into Salt using Pillar and Grains, write templates for files using Jinja
  • Salt Pillars and Grains and how to store and retrieve data from them.
  • Writing a state that generates dynamic configuration file for nginx using templates and pillars data.
  • Introduction to Monitoring, Nagios vs Prometheus
  • Setting up Nagios and use its plugins to setup some basic alerts
  • Introduction to Prometheus and some of its concepts like time series
  • Setup Prometheus and various exporters/discovery service to send metrics from our cloud server to Prometheus.
  • Write some alerts for Prometheus and query metrics using the Prometheus dashboard.
  • Setup Logstash, Kibana and Elasticsearch using Salt.

  • Singaporeans aged 35 and above (13 years and above for Persons With Disabilities) and earn not more than $2,000 per month, may enjoy subsidies up to 95% of the course fees.

Enhanced Training Support for SMEs (ETSS)

Course attendee is eligible for only one funding scheme.

#For company-sponsored participants, companies would need to pay upfront 30% of the course fee to NUS-ISS and submit a training grant application for the remaining eligible subsidies, and subsequently a claim in Skillsconnect. For details, please refer to Skillsconnect guide 4.1 & 5.1.

This course is aligned to the National Infocomm Competency Framework (NICF) and accredited by SSG. Absentee payroll and up to 70% SSG funding of the course fee is available for eligible participants (Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents). Absentee payroll subsidy will be capped at 57 hours and is available for eligible companies and companies on a short work week system will receive the absentee payroll subsidy based on their employees' current income. Certificate of Completion

The ISS Certificate of Completion will be issued to participants who have attended at least 75% of the course.

Assessment

Participants will be assessed based on their aptitude, attitude and the quality of deliverables produced.

Participants may need to attend additional coaching sessions and re-assessments if they do not pass. ISS reserves the right not to disclose any information on the course assessment process.
