NUS-ISS Learning Day 2018
This year’s NUS-ISS Learning Day was part of the nationwide SkillsFuture Festival. The event that attracted 465 participants, with over 34 curated sessions of insightful keynotes, panels discussions and hands-on demonstration of emerging technologies.

SkillsFuture Festival @SMU
NUS-ISS was one of the exhibitors at the SkillsFuture Festival@SMU. Two of our lecturers also gave keynote presentations; Mr Nicholas Tan’s ‘Start with Data Governance’ and Mr Eric Tham”s ‘AI in Finance with Sentiment Analysis’ sessions were well-received.

The mantra is “build-learn-iterate”. This panel discussion touched on the Product Thinking Mindset that has gained traction in recent years, and how it can help product teams to solve business problems.

3. The 7th ITSM Community of Practice (CoP) Forum presents – How DevOps and BizOps are supporting the shift towards Digitalisation and the new Digital Economy
IT infra and operations teams are increasingly adopting DevOps and BizOps best-practices. This forum explored ways in which the new models help companies to meet digitalisation objectives while delivering business outcomes.

19th Architecture Community of Practice (ACoP) Forum – Digital transformation impacts on Enterprise Architecture
Significant changes in enterprise architecture practices are required to drive digital transformation in an organisation. This forum addressed the difficulties legacy companies face in managing change in their digitalisation journey.

The 3rd Product Community of Practice (PCoP) Forum: Product Management
In the world of Product Management, everything matters – from the big picture (the forest) to the details (the trees). This session highlighted the importance of understanding the product ecosystem, and how it affects Product Managers.

Workshops & Masterclasses
This Masterclass gave participants an overview on the latest advances in Deep Learning from the industry perspective. It also provided a practical jumpstart into Deep Learning using Deep Neural Networks in computer vision applications.
The advantage of running deep learning models locally is that sensitive information doesn’t have to be transmitted over the network. In this talk, attendees were shown how deep learning models run on small devices, such as a mobile phone or a Raspberry Pi.
Ethereum is a platform for deploying Smart Contracts, which are used for functions such as commerce, voting, and to show provenance. This workshop offered participants a glimpse into the exciting possibilities the new technology can bring.
This workshop showcased Kubernetes – a container orchestration platform for managing containers. It performs and simplifies tasks like restarting containers if they die, routing request to appropriate application and scheduling rolling updates.
More organisations are moving towards high-stakes use of IT where there is low tolerance of any disruption to their services. In this masterclass, Ms Marta Sanfeliu, Atos Chief Operations Officer, Olympics and Major Events, talked about on how organisations can manage high-stake Business-IT operations successfully.
This keynote and demo session delved into the pros and cons of two web frameworks Flask and Express. Attendees got to see a web application being built (live!) using both frameworks side-by-side.
One of the most famous agent of Reinforcement learning (RL) is AlphaGo, the computer programme that defeated a world chess champion. In this workshop, participants learned RL basics, including Bellman equation and Monte Carlo (MC) method.
Blockchain was one of the hottest buzzwords the past couple of years –.and perhaps the best way to gain real insight into this technology is by building your very own chain! Which was exactly what we got the participants to do.
Participants at this fun-filled workshop got to try their hands at creating their very own Android app using Android Studio, Java, and lots of creativity.
This workshop touched on SSR (Server Side Rendering), which turns the traditional paradigm of CSR (Client Side Rendering) on its head – by delivering both the application artefacts and content to the browser during the initial load of the application.
At this workshop, participants got to build their own voice-enabled mobile application using Alexa, the Google Assistant. Doesn’t that sound exciting?
React and Angular are two extremely popular JavaScript frameworks that have gained a foothold in the mobile application space. In this StackUp Workshop, participants learned how to build Angular and a React application side by side to see how the two frameworks compare.
