The 6th Architecture Community of Practice (ACoP) Forum presents - Strategic Planning and Enterprise Architecture

EA can be used to support Strategic Planning and Business Transformation activities. Many organisations without an Enterprise Architecture function will risk failing to properly implement or deliver on their business strategy as EA bridges the gap between new strategy ideas and the execution of those ideas. Come join us for our next ACoP forum as we explore on how Strategic Planning and EA go hand in hand.

7:15 pm Pragmatic Implementation of EA for Strategic Planning: Balancing Ideals & Realities
Mr. Mohammad Azree Rahim
Assistant Director, Planning & CIO Office, Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS)

Much has been written about the efficacy of EA as an integrative methodology in developing business agility and achieving strategic transformation. As defined by (Gartner, 2013), EA delivers value by presenting business and IT leaders with signature-ready recommendations for adjusting policies and projects to achieve target business outcomes. It is said that with EA as strategy, organisations will be able to tackle complexity and sustain coherent enterprises.

However, non-practitioners (senior management staff included) often find it challenging to understand and appreciate the value of EA as it may be perceived to be as just another IT tool. Hence, it is imperative for architects to be 'stakeholder-savvy’ and ensure that EA’s usefulness and utility is well-communicated to all levels of the organisation.

Given these dilemmas, what then would be a pragmatic approach in balancing the theoretical benefits of EA (“ideals”) and the inherent organisational constraints (“realities”)? How can the trade-offs be effectively managed? What are the key enablers of a successful EA implementation?

This session will share MUIS’ experience in using the EA approach to develop its 4th MUIS Three-Year Plan (4M3YP). The speaker will discuss several valuable artefacts, produced during this strategic planning exercise, that have created significant impact to the organisation. He will also explore the challenges faced by the EA Team during this transformative journey and the steps that are proving to be effective in dealing with them. Insights on how EA principles have facilitated a connected and holistic view of the enterprise will also be presented.
