The 5th Smart Health Community of Practice (CoP): Improving Access to Healthcare: Telehealth and Legal Strategies in the Peruvian Health Sector

During this talk, physicians from Peru in South America, will share their country’s experiences in attempting to improve access to healthcare through legal and technology levers.

Hugo Quezada and Kim Cajachagua will look at one of the biggest achievements in the Peruvian Health Sector, the creation of the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) law. The UHC law provides Peruvians with access to health services, with quality and with opportunity.  Since the creation of this law, Peru has made great progress in achieving Universal Health Coverage. Through of a series of reforms and laws the public health insurance coverage of the population has risen from 32.3% in 2002 to 73% in 2012, offering affordable access to healthcare for a greater proportion of the population.

Accessibility to healthcare in Peru has also been enhanced through various technology-based solutions, with a commitment to telehealth and telemedicine.  Hugo and Kim will talk through some of the key programmes implemented in recent years, including REDNACE, an integrated platform which provides access to information and knowledge across sectors, including health, education, national defense, culture, and investigation.
