High-Demand Digital Skills in the Future Economy

High-Demand Digital Skills in the Future Economy
The research in “The Skills Demand for the Future Economy (SDFE) Report 2022”, published by SkillsFuture Singapore, found that the demand for workers with skills in the digital, green and caregiving economies has surged over the last four years. As Singapore economy continues to evolve, NUS-ISS has identified six digital skills with high demand growth from the report:

  1. Media Data Management – 800.0% Demand Growth
  2. Data Analytics System Design – 400.0% Demand Growth
  3. Data and Information Visualisation – 333.3% Demand Growth
  4. Data Storytelling and Visualisation – 321.7% Demand Growth
  5. Data Collection and Management – 112.8% Demand Growth
  6. Data Collection and Analysis – 100.1% Demand Growth
These skills are also highly transferable across different industries. According to Professor Lim Sun Sun at the Singapore University of Technology and Design, the Covid-19 pandemic accelerated digitalisation across industries which might have otherwise been slower to move. Furthermore, the findings that Singapore has manpower constraints implies, every industry will try to adopt faster digitalisation for efficiencies.

Acquiring and upgrading these skills would therefore help prepare mid-career professionals to remain relevant and be future-ready.

9:30am The Intersection of Data Management and Data Storytelling: The Essential Data Skills for Data Professionals to Empower Better Decisions
By Mr Brandon Ng
Senior Lecturer & Consultant, Data Science Practice
NUS-ISS

Due to digitalisation of different industrial sectors, data-driven storytelling is increasingly adopted by organisations in order to gain the competitive advantage with data and analytics and achieve better revenue growth. This empowers the data professionals (e.g. data scientists, data analysts, data storytellers) to distill and highlight actionable insights through engaging presentation and effective communication via data storytelling. The main focus of data storytelling is to explain, engage, and enlighten the target audience. To facilitate data storytelling, data professionals also need to be equipped with the essential skills to understand and implement data manipulation and management.

In this seminar, we will highlight the intersection of these two important skills and how you could plan your skill development journey ahead.
10:15am Tea Break (Light refreshments will be provided)
10:30am The Network Thinking: How Graphs Empower Machine Learning and Knowledge Management within Organisations
By Mr Nirmal Palaparthi
Principal Lecturer & Consultant, Data Science Practice
NUS-ISS
&
Mr Prakash Sukhwal
Lecturer & Consultant, Data Science Practice
NUS-ISS

Graph data science has been used to solve many real-life problems by analysing and representing data in the form of networks. Its applications includes finding all possible or most cost-effective travel paths that can be taken by a private hire vehicle from one destination to another, or the identification of users with anomalous or potentially fraudulent behaviours on social media platforms. During the last decade, we have seen an astounding confluence of graph theory and data science which have made graphs even more effective and useful than ever. Companies such as Google and Netflix has been utilising graph data science in their development of the Google PageRank and Content Recommender respectively.

In this seminar, we will highlight how graphs power some of the human endeavours in both industry and research sectors. We will also discuss why this is an important skillset to have in the emerging digital economy.
11:15am Production-Grade Data Science: The Whys and Hows of Bridging the Gap Between Data Science and Data Engineering
By Dr Stuart Wang
Senior Lecturer & Consultant, Data Science Practice
NUS-ISS
&
Mr Lim Suang
Lecturer & Consultant, Data Science Practice
NUS-ISS

In current times, data professionals are not only expected to be able to develop data science algorithms and models to solve business problems, but also to deploy them in real production environment. To do so, it requires the individuals to appreciate all the three aspects – 1) Use of suitable data models to achieve business goals, 2) Appropriate analytics solution & architecture and 3) The understanding of the production process. For the organisations, the integration of production-grade data science solution into the existing work processes can help identify potential bottlenecks and allows the implementation of system improvements to optimise performance and resource utilisation.

In this seminar, we will discuss the nuances of construction and deployment of data pipeline in both Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Airflow environment, as well as some common obstacles and pitfalls that the organisations and data professionals faced when embarking on this journey.
