Young Professional of the Year award for two individuals

NEPTUNE Orient Lines (NOL) Group CIO Wu Choy Peng is the Singapore Computer Society's (SCS) IT Leader of the Year.

Ms Wu is the second woman to win the award, after Tan Yen Yen, current senior vice-president of applications for Oracle Asia-Pacific.

She was presented the award last Friday evening at an SCS gala dinner.

Ms Wu has been chief information officer at NOL since 2006. Prior to that, she was the government's CIO as deputy chief executive (industry) of the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA).

In that role, she oversaw a team of 650 IT professionals. Her journey with the civil service started when she joined the National Computer Board in 1986, and her subsequent 19 years in the government included her CIO role at the Ministry of Education.

SCS gives out the award to individuals who have contributed to IT in Singapore beyond their immediate business interests.

Speaking at the event, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Yaacob Ibrahim said Singapore's infocomm sector has developed rapidly over the past few years.

He noted that more than 80 foreign start-ups have established 'critical infocomms functions and ventures' here since 2008.

Multinational corporation investment has also continued, with the likes of IBM and Google setting up large facilities in the country. Last year, IBM opened a services integration hub, and Google kicked off the construction of a new data centre here, he said.

He added that the government is committed to developing infocomm skills here, and highlighted the government's infocomm manpower development roadmap.

Since last year, 13 programmes have been rolled out by IDA and its partners, to enrich infocomm manpower here, said the minister.

Other IT professionals were honoured at the event. Among them was Lim Swee Cheang, CEO of the Institute of Systems Science (ISS) at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Mr Lim was inducted into the Hall of Fame for helping to develop several industry-oriented educational programmes for IT professionals during his career.

SCS said Hall of Famers must have played crucial roles in shaping and guiding the path of IT development in Singapore.

One of the two Young Professional of the Year awards went to Kelly Choo, who co-founded social media start-up Brandtology in 2007. The firm was sold after three years to Media Monitors for a reported eight-figure sum.

The other Young Professional of the Year is Joel Lou, CEO of JustCommodity Software Solutions, which provides commodity trading and risk management products.

SCS also handed out two IT Youth awards to Nicholas Ooi and Zhang Lizi, for their involvement in the IT scene.

The awards were decided by a panel drawn from the business, public and academic sectors.
