Q&A with Associate Lecturer & Consultant, Data Science Practice, Zhu Hui Ying

Hui Ying, Associate Lecturer & Consultant of NUS-ISS' Data Science Practice, is as much a fitness enthusiast as she is a foodie. Read on to get to know more about Hui Ying and her knack for all things data!

1. Hi Hui Ying, please tell us about your professional background:

huiying low
I am an Associate Lecturer and Consultant with NUS-ISS. Prior to joining ISS, I was a Research Engineer (Data Scientist) at Airbus managing time series analysis on sensor data, processing aircraft big data and creating dashboards. I also helped improve predictive classification model performance by refining data cleaning and selecting suitable models for bias datasets. Before joining Airbus, I was a Data Analyst intern with DBS Bank where I helped to detect high risk transactions using machine learning and developed classification models to predict risk scores.

2. Could you share more about the modules/courses which you teach at NUS-ISS?

I teach Statistics for Business, Statistics Bootcamp and Data Story Telling. Statistics for Business is a foundation course which helps non-technical users perform a variety of data analysis in order to derive factual insights and ultimately gain experience in making evidence-based business decisions. Statistics Bootcamp is for people to pick up statistics skills by programming. Data Story Telling is a skill that one can learn to build dashboards and tell a compelling story with big data.

3. Why did you choose to teach at NUS-ISS?

When I was a student, my classmates often came to me and asked me questions. I am always patient and clear in sharing my knowledge to solve problems we faced together. They nicknamed me 'Teacher Zhu' and that’s where I felt a calling as knowing that my passion lies in the field of teaching, I went for it and never looked back. Thus far, being a teacher has been my favorite job.

4. What do you enjoy most about your work?

I like preparing courses and teaching face to face. When preparing a lesson plan, you become like an artist. You design the purpose of the course, logical ways to teach, creative stories to attract students and you need to research a lot before preparing every single slide. Moreover, I also enjoy facing students and teaching what is helpful to them for their careers. It is very valuable work. At the same time, our students are from different nationalities and countries allowing me to gather a rich working experience through my many discussions with them and this to me is equal parts work and fun!

5. How do you keep up with the industry?

I often do my research online to keep myself updated on the newest technology. As I have also previously worked in DBS and Airbus, I would often discuss pertinent topics with my former colleagues. They would share a lot of new industry development perspectives and real world problems they face. Meanwhile, as a student supervisor, we give advice and suggestions to students as they tackle their company projects. These practices help me keep in touch with the industry.

6. What are your favorite activities when you are not working?

I exercise a lot! I often run 5 km in the outdoors after working. It helps to rid all negative thoughts from the day and to simply concentrate on myself. After running, I feel very refreshed and energetic. Currently, you would also often find me playing tennis. Engaging in sports is truly a fun way to keep fit physically and mentally!

7. Tell us something about yourself that very few people know.

I enjoy the process of handcrafting Chinese flour delicacies, like dumplings, pau (steamed buns) and noodles. Here are some of my creations which I love to cook for family and friends:
