An Alumnus' Success Journey of Transforming Passion into Expertise in Artificial Intelligence

As the Head of AI at Obello in the USA, Khanh Linh Ngyuen spearheads
the research, implementation, and deployment of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) models. Her success today is rooted in a journey that began years ago. After graduating from university, Lihn started her career as a research engineer.

Sparked by the groundbreaking IBM Watson and DeepBlue systems, her fascination with AI ignited her interest and motivated her to pursue a graduate degree. “I was inspired by the achievements of IBM Watson and DeepBlue systems,” said Linh. “They demonstrated the potential of machines to understand and interact with humans in a profound way.” she continued.

The turning point in Linh’s journey came when she attended the NUS-ISS recruitment event at the Hanoi Mövenpick Hotel in 2013. It was there that she realised the Master of Technology in Artificial Intelligence Systems (MTech AIS) programme was the perfect opportunity to take her passion to the next level. “It was truly life-changing,” Linh recalled. “The event was crucial in introducing me to the programmes and their offerings.”

As Linh immersed herself in the MTech AIS programme, she found herself captivated by the comprehensive, up-to-date curriculum that aligned with the latest developments in AI and ML. What stood out the most to her was the expertise of the lecturers, who brought real industry experience into the classroom. The diverse cohort of students also enriched her learning journey. Through in-depth discussions and collaborative projects, Linh formed solid friendships with her course-mates. She also had wonderful memories of the vibrant atmosphere around the campus, especially University Town where she frequently had her evening stroll with friends after dinner.

Like any other student, Linh faced her fair share of challenges during the programme. Juggling theoretical knowledge with coding and practical skills was no easy feat. “The course was definitely not easy,” she admitted. “But I developed strong time management skills and collaborated with my course-mates on group projects to overcome these challenges.” The demanding coursework not only expanded her technical knowledge but also helped her become more resourceful and resilient.

Despite NUS-ISS’ rigorous one-year full-time programme, Linh excelled and achieved remarkable milestones. Her final-year project, titled Simpler Choices, focused on developing an advanced recommendation system that helped simplify decision-making processes for users. In addition to this, Linh also scored an internship at IBM where she worked on a project related to logistic planning and prediction using social media data and NLP techniques. “I’m proud of everything I achieved,” she said. “It was a challenging learning journey, yet it was very nurturing and interesting at the same time.”

With her newly earned qualifications, it opened incredible opportunities for Linh. She was able to apply what she learned in advanced NLP techniques and machine learning, coupled with her solid background in MLOps and end-to-end ML pipelines to her daily work. With that, Linh was able to propel her career forward, taking up positions at leading organisations such as IBM, Shopee, and A*STAR before further advancing her career by relocating to USA.

Looking back on her journey, Linh has some valuable advice for those considering a graduate programme. “Embrace the challenges with the “just do it” mindset. It’s a fantastic chance to push your boundaries and grow,” she advised. She also emphasised the importance of networking with peers, seniors and lecturers more to gain the relevant experience.

From a curious research engineer to a trailblazer in AI, Linh’s journey is a solid testament of passion, perseverance, and transformation.
