1. Hi Simon! Please tell us about your professional background.
I started my career at the National Technological University (NTU), where I handled the postgraduate and executive education programmes. My responsibilities covered the full spectrum of course management, including marketing, operations, and logistics. Over the years, I've gained valuable experience at both local and international universities, specialising in career services and alumni relations.
With my strong background in education management, career services, and talent development, I’ve had the privilege of driving career success and business growth across various institutions. I've worked with notable universities like Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, ESSEC Business School, and the Singapore Institute of Technology.
2. Can you share more about your role and how it impacts our organisational/staff development?
I head the alumni relations and career services team at NUS-ISS, where I manage a team of three career advisors. My role is important in connecting the dots between NUS-ISS, our students, alumni, and industry partners. Career services and alumni relations are vital component at the heart of any educational institution, supporting students transition smoothly into the workforce, enhancing their employability, and building lasting connections with employers.
Alumni relations play a key role in strengthening ties between graduates and their alma mater, encouraging lifelong learning, professional development, and valuable networking opportunities. Together, career services and alumni relations not only elevate the student experience but also reinforce the institution’s brand, foster a strong sense of community and loyalty, and contribute to broader economic growth and workforce development.
3. What is the most satisfying aspect of your role?
It’s incredibly rewarding to witness students grow from the moment they begin their educational journey. Watching their transformation and achievements as they advance in their careers is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my role.
4. How do you keep up with the industry?
To stay ahead, I prioritise on two key strategies. First, I commit myself to continuous learning and upskilling by taking short courses, such as Data Storytelling and Business Agility. This helps me stay current with the market trends, a mindset I’ve carried with me from my background in the education industry. Second, I actively engage with strategic relationships with corporate partners and alumni, using networking events to stay in tune with industry developments. Through informational interviews, I gain valuable insights into the challenges companies are facing and where the industry is heading.
5. What are your favourite activities outside of work?
I love spending quality time with my family, whether it’s playing board games or watching Netflix together. I also enjoy traveling with them as I always believe that 读万卷书不如行万里路 (Reading ten thousand books is not comparable to travelling ten thousand miles). Experiencing diverse cultures and engaging with people from varied backgrounds can be a more enriching learning experience than traditional classroom education.

6. Share with us something about yourself that very few people know.
I hit the gym for a quick workout or a run, helping me to de-stress and clear up my thoughts. When I need to relax, I listen to audiophile-quality music, with a special fondness for Chinese and Cantonese hits from the 80’s and 90’s.
