The goal of the Graduate Certificate in “Intelligent Reasoning Systems” (IRS) is to teach participants the knowledge, skills and industry best practices to design and build Intelligent Systems that solve problems by computational reasoning using captured domain knowledge as well as knowledge discovered/learnt from both small and big data.

It is ideal for software engineers, artificial intelligence engineers and professionals who wish to gain specialised knowledge of intelligent reasoning systems which are for decision support and recommendation in nature.  This certificate consists of three component courses and a practice module.

Objectives

The aim of the practice module is for the students to assimilate the knowledge gained through the three component courses and to be able to apply them in a holistic manner to solve real-world problems using acquired expert knowledge, and knowledge discovered from small/big data mining. The practice module consists of two parts i.e.; a Practice Project and an Examination. Thus this module enables participants to demonstrate their proficiency across all of the skills that they have learned in the course modules and hence be certified as competent at the Certificate level.

Intended Audience

This Practice module is targeted at participants who wish to complete the certification process for the Certificate in “Intelligent Reasoning Systems”.

Prerequisites

Participants must have successfully completed all (or have been exempted from) the three course modules for the Certificate in Intelligent Reasoning Systems as listed above.

Components

There are two parts to the Practice Module.

  1. Practice Project: Participants will need to undertake one or more projects to gain practical experience and demonstrate their understanding and mastery of the skills taught in the three component courses. The practice project will require each participant to expend an estimated 10 days of effort. These days are not expected to be contiguous and may stretch over many weeks. These projects may be conducted by individual participants or in teams depending on the nature of the project requirements.
  2. Examination: Each participant is required to sit for an examination on a stipulated date and time.
  3. The overall grade for the participant will be based on the Practice project and Examination.

Intelligent Reasoning System: Central Provident Fund Investment Advisor

Life expectancies over the world have generally increased over the years, allowing us to be able to spend more time with loved ones and enjoy various activities. Most importantly, there are more years to enjoy after retirement. To ensure the desired standard of living during our golden years, a significant retirement nest egg has to be maintained.

Though the Singapore government has implemented a compulsory social security savings scheme for every working Singapore Citizen and Permanent Resident, it would be good to further boost our retirement nest by investing.

However, all investment comes with risk and various important decisions that have to be made. We have to be careful to ensure that our retirement savings are not overwhelmingly at risk while maximizing our expected returns.

In this project, our group has proposed a solution, named CPF Investment Advisor. CPF Investment Advisor is able to address the various concerns that one may have before investing – should I invest, or should I just leave the money in my CPF account? How much should I invest in each stock? We will also discuss limitations of the solution and suggest possible improvements for future work to handle investment products of increased complexity.

A food delivery company would like to open up its internally operated delivery platform to public customers and third party delivery providers. This requires exposing its existing internal services to applications and/or services offered by other parties on the internet. This would also require the creation of suitable web-based and mobile client applications as well as allowing direct access by third party consumer/provider applications. The security architecture of the platform needs to be analysed, architected, designed and reviewed to ensure that systems, data, network and other infrastructure of the platform are adequately protected.

Intelligent Reasoning System: Singapore Intelligent Issuance Recommender System (SINRA)

Insurance is a means of protection from financial loss. An insurance policy is a contract used to indemnify individuals for covered losses and in managing cash flow uncertainty. Insurance industry has already several well-established players and in Singapore particularly there are several new entrants as well. Competition in insurance is important in providing competitive premiums and quality service. With the overwhelming number of plans, individuals will have more options and determining the right plan can be time consuming and might not result in choosing the best plan. SINRA Singapore Intelligent Insurance Recommender Agent is a system which has considered the core features of design simplicity and intelligent performance to provide the insurance policy recommendation to the user by understanding their needs.

Intelligent Reasoning System: COVID-19 Knowledge/Chat-Bot

The novel coronavirus pandemic, also known as COVID-19, has undoubtedly and most unfortunately grown to be one of the worst global pandemic in recent history. As of April 7, 2020, there were more than 1.4 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 around the world and more than 86,000 deaths, touching every continent including Antarctica. Singapore has also been hit relatively hard by the virus.

Indeed, the threat of COVID-19 is very real and is only growing. The world has to comprehend this threat and it is by understanding the situation better that we may hopefully win the battle against the pandemic sooner rather than later. However, the need to understand how to tackle the virus is not necessarily exclusive to healthcare experts or servicemen. Everyone has to play their part in taking the right actions in order to help curb the spread of the virus. It may be as simple as sanitising your hands frequently, to keeping up to date with the latest news on a country’s preventive measures. If any one individual fails to understand and carry out the right actions, the risk of spreading the virus is compounded and if one individual becomes many, said risk will no doubt grow exponentially.

Our project team is dedicated in equipping the general public with the relevant knowledge they should know in order to best protect themselves and those around them against the spread of the virus. As such, we have come up with a solution to help disseminate information on COVID-19 as simply and conveniently as possible. In fact, we have taken the term ‘knowledge’ quite literally by introducing artificial intelligence aided systems in our solution.

First and foremost, our solution will take advantage of the cognitive system capabilities found in a chatbot. We will be making use of the natural language processing provided by Google’s Diaglogflow service and deploying it on Telegram, one of the most popular and widely used messaging platforms. These will help us to reach out to a vast majority of the general public. Secondly, we apply machine reasoning to acquire and prepare our knowledge base of information related to COVID-19. Further to that, we have made use of machine inference in the form of rules so that users can ask questions and be provided with the relevant answers and knowledge that they need. Last but certainly not least, our solution is also a reasoning system as we understand that each user’s needs are unique. As such, we are able to search for answers that best suit the user’s specific needs, such as providing the user with an optimal answer relative to his/her location.

Our project team hopes that with our solution, the general public will be able to receive updated knowledge through a method that is easy to use, accessible, understandable and personalised. It is only through the efforts of every single individual in doing their part in fighting COVID-19 that we may stop this pandemic. If our solution could play a small role in doing that, then it would already be a humble success in our books.
