Digital Disruption: New Business Models in the Digital Economy

In 2013 many parts of the global economy are totally digital. We can guarantee that every business started this year, whether it be a restaurant or technology company is, in someway, digital. From their websites, their telephony, their marketing and their supply chain, nothing is left untouched by the digital revolution.

Yet, many organisations still don't understand the transformative effective of digital business models. How these technologies and models change the way we think of and manage organisations.

New approaches such as crowdfunding, MOOC education, collaborative and sharing economies are being facilitated the digital revolution. The advent of cloud, mobile and wearable computing opens up even more frontiers.

In this seminar we bring together a world leading academics with local digital pioneer to discuss the risks and opportunities they see emerging.

Professor Irene Ng Marketing and Service Systems and Director of the International Institute of Product and Service Innovation at WMG, University of Warwick. Adjunct Professor NUS Institute of Systems Science

Professor Ng brings the customer centricity of marketing into the trans-disciplinary domain of service systems, particularly in new business models and pricing/revenue models. Her research lies in the trans-disciplinary understanding of value; creating, designing, pricing, contracting and innovating based on value, embedded within new economic and business models of complex service systems. She has published numerous articles in the domain of management, marketing, engineering, information systems, economics, education and sociology. Within complex service systems, her research interests are also in the area of Value-based Service Innovation, Viability and Service Transformation of Organisations, Outcome based Contracts, Build/System-for-outcomes, Servitization as well as Service Capacity.

Professor Irene Ng Marketing and Service Systems and Director of the International Institute of Product and Service Innovation at WMG, University of Warwick. Adjunct Professor NUS Institute of Systems Science

Professor Irene Ng joined ISS as Adjunct Professor. She is engaged to contribute to the three thrusts of Research, Teaching and Practice for The Service Innovation Cluster of the institute.

Professor Ng is the Professor of Marketing and Service Systems at the Warwick Manufacturing Group of the University of Warwick, UK. She is one of the six UK government appointed Service Fellows at the Advanced Institute of Management (AIM), Cambridge, while serving as Fellow at Wolfson College, University of Cambridge. She holds a first degree in Physics, Applied Physics and Computer Programming and a doctorate from NUS specialising in the advanced pricing model for services.

Professor Ng was an entrepreneur and business practitioner for more than 10 years, most notably as the CEO of SA Tours group of companies and Empress Cruise Lines. She has been a consultant and advisor to organisations such as BAE Systems, The UK National Health Service, Rolls Royce and Selex Galileo.

Mr Brendan Goh co-founded the Singapore-based startup, Pirate3d with his childhood friends, Roger Chang and Tsang You Jun, as well as serial tech entrepreneur Neo Kok Beng, a professor at the National University of Singapore. Pirate3d is a Singapore-based startup that is developing an affordable, user-friendly 3D printer for the mass market.

Mr Leo Shimada is the Founder and CEO of Crowdonomic (CWD). CWD's mission is to empower innovators in Asia through a hybrid crowdfunding platform offering both Reward-based crowdfunding (www.crowdonomic.com) and Equity-based crowdfunding (crowdonomic.launchrock.com).

Leo brings a wealth of investment and business building experience in Asia and has a proven track record working in world class institutions. He was a management consultant with McKinsey & Co and a strategy leader for APAC at Diageo, a premium drinks brand. As an entrepreneur, he started FWC Partners, a strategy and M&A advisory firm. He obtained a law major from Keio University in Japan and an MBA From INSEAD.

Mr Stuart Smith is the Deputy Chief for the Service Innovation Practice at the Institute of Systems Science at NUS. He is an expert in service transformation and innovation. His experience spans major private and public-sector clients around the world. Clients have included some of the biggest corporate brands and governments including CISCO, Akzo Nobel, BBC, Marks & Spencers, ACAS, O2, Bouygues, Deloittes, HSBC, SABIC, British Telecom, and UK Design Council. Stuart has presented keynotes at several conferences as well as publishing a number of papers and articles on service innovation.
