ISS Seminar: Paying it Forward Book Launch: Asia's Entrepreneurs: Dilemmas, Risks and Opportunities

ISBN: 9780415527762 | Authors: Virginia Cha, Jennifer Lien | Pub Date: 21 March 2013

Singapore's technology entrepreneurship today is a hotbed of activities - block 71, NRF TIS funding schemes, incubators, and hackers-thons. Today's vibrant ecosystem came from a rough-and-tumble period of lessons gleaned from early technology venturing from the mid-90's, where venture funding was scarce and technology entrepreneurship was a novelty. This book captures some of the key lessons of the earlier days and chronicles the journeys of IT technopreneurs, and the role of ASTAR, Institute of Systems Science (then later changed to Kent Ridge Digital Labs, now I2R) played in developing today's ecosystem.

What are the key lessons from technology entrepreneurship important in the innovation process? What is the potential ‘golden window’ of opportunity where nascent entrepreneurs are more likely to take risks and succeed? A must-read for young and mid-career professionals looking at starting a technology venture in Asia, the book provides an insider’s view to how technopreneurs view entrepreneurial opportunities from use of technology, raise funding to support their vision, and the subsequent relationship with their investors.

The book features well-known figures and entrepreneurs who are now NRF TIS Incubators: Leslie Loh (Red Dot), Ronnie Wee (IncuVest), Chak Kong Soon (Managing Partner of Stream Global, President of Singapore Computer Society). In addition, the stories of IT Technopreneurs Danny Wilson (Pixelmetrix), Ng Fook Sun (Wirecard Asia Pacific - Systems@Work) are still unfolding.

Today's young technopreneurs who are mentored by this ecosystem will also highlight their still developing journeys: Dickson Gregory (Paywhere), and Xu Daxiang (Gozo Labs).
