NUS-ISS & PMI: Project Management Body of Knowledge Sixth Edition Update (2nd Run)

PMI has just released PMBOK Guide 6th edition in Sep 2017 and this guide will be the main text used by the PMP exam starting 26 March 2018.

This seminar will discuss PMBOK® 6 in terms of the new additions and changes to the content structure, Knowledge Area features as well as added harmonisation in process groups, tools and techniques.  In addition, the talk will also examine new emphasis in this guide that could point to the future progression and evolution of the project management profession.

Daniel manages a teaching and consultancy practice in project management, specializing in project management competency development and training. He and his team provide consultancy and training based on the PMBOK® (A Guide to Project Management Body of Knowledge, Project Management Institute), CITPM BOK (Certification in IT Project Management) and COMIT BOK (Certificate in Outsourcing Management). Other offerings under the practice include Project Leadership for Project Managers, P3O – Portfolio, Program Project Office Certification, Scrum Master Certification and PRINCE2 Certification and Project Management for Information Systems.

Besides running professional courses in project management, Daniel also consulted many companies and organizations in delivering customized training; chief amongst them include Citibank, Ministry for Home Affairs, Singapore Changi Hospital, Central Provident Fund Board, United Overseas Bank, OCBC Bank, Atos Origin, TetraPak, Sony, Yokogawa Engineering, Singapore Computer Systems, HP, Integrated Health Information Systems  and IDA. These training sessions were mainly delivered in Singapore, some in China, Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand and Maldives.

Daniel has over 20 years of IT experience in product development, testing, quality and project management. Prior to joining ISS, he was the Director of Operations, holding the resource, quality and project management office, at an IBM subsidiary. He has also held various management positions as department head of e-Business, project management, operations and process quality.

Liong Choon is currently an Lecturer cum consultant in ISS. He started his career in ISS as Deputy Director of the National Infocomm Competency Academy in 2007, to help spearhead the development and implementation of competency-based training in various Institute of Higher Learning in collaboration with WDA & IDA. His current focus is in the development & training of project management cluster of courses as well other related courses such as Business Process Management and IT Outsourcing.  In the area of consultancy, Liong Choon has helped various organisations in their development and setup of a IT competency framework based on the NICF (National Infocomm Competency Framework). These organisations include NOL Pte Ltd, Changi Airport Group Pte Ltd and Resort World Sentosa Pte Ltd.

Prior to joining ISS, Liong Choon was an Senior Executive IT Manager in IDA providing IT management and services delivery to various public sector agencies and ministries, include MTI & Department of Statistics. His past portfolio in IDA includes also serving as the Technical Project Director for PM2S – the new Civil Service-wide HR Management system under the auspices of the Prime Minister’s Officer. He took on this role in May 2002, and he oversees a team of 16 IT consultants to implement and deploy PM2S to the whole civil service.

Prior to this, Liong Choon was an Executive IT Manager in the IT Branch of the Ministry of Education (MOE). In that role, Liong Choon was in charge of the IT Applications Systems services department of about 40 staff. Starting as an Application Service Manager in May 1999, he has overseen the successful delivery of various new and major IT systems involving time-critical (e.g. examinations operations), large scale (admission systems with student base of 50,000, complex network with 380 schools) and complex (examinations operations, school/lesson planning and administration).

Liong Choon has a cumulative history of more than 10 years of IT industry experience covering full system development life cycle, IT contracts and outsourcing, IT management, IT QA, Independent Testing Services, Technical Architecture and Strategic IT Planning.

Over and above his core duties, Liong Choon has been actively engaged as a key member of a number of important and strategic task forces, at both the IDA level as well as within MOE itself. Three notable engagements were the development of an OD (Organisation Development) Consultancy Model aimed at a holistic approach to organisation development, System Review and IT Development so as to achieve service delivery excellence and in 2 taskforces in 2001/2 which looked at the organisation’s Performance Development and Management model.

Liong Choon is a highly dedicated and self-driven individual. He is amongst the few who are adept at both the broad managerial role as well as in a highly specialized role in the management of large, service-wide and highly complex ICT systems and infrastructure. In his previous employment with the Defence Science Organization (DSO), he was also involved in a highly strategic Engineering Master Plan (EMP) study to chart the 5-year technology plan for one of the services in MINDEF. Completed in 1997, he was directly involved in the presentations of the EMP to various senior commanders and service chief at various forum and steering committees and subsequent presentation to the committee chaired by the Defence Minister and service chiefs for approval in Feb 97. oversees the Advanced Analytics initiative at IHiS, including Enterprise data warehouse, Predictive Analytics, Text Mining and Data Discovery.
