For the 5th consecutive year, NUS-ISS Learning Day 2019 as part of the nationwide SkillsFuture Festival, inspires to cultivate the next generation of digital talent to realise their aspiration and potential through mastery of future ready skills.
Held on Friday, 2 August, the one-day event attracted 800 attendees – a 40 percent increase from last year.
The learning journey was curated into 10 distinct tracks. Namely, Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Digital Transformation & Leadership, Digital Agility, Digital Marketing & Design Thinking, Digital Products & Platforms, Smart Systems, Smart Health and StackUp.
Consisting of industry keynotes, panel discussions and hands-on demonstration, the line-up offered a myraid of unique learning experiences for young learners, working professionals and active agers. They were conducted by NUS-ISS teaching staff – all of whom have an average of over 20 years of industry experience – as well as invited guest speakers from the industry.
Guest speaker, Mr Jack Heng, Assistant Vice President, Experience Strategy of DBS Bank’s Transformation Group who spoke to a 175 strong crowd about 'Business Analysis in the Digital Age', enthused, “I felt the best part of learning day was around the agenda, because it was well spread out and there were various talks and workshops for participants to get hands on experience.”

Singapore Airline’s talk on ‘SIA’s Digital Transformation Journey’ also drew a large turnout as invited guest speaker, Mr Dai Hao Yu, Divisional Vice President, Digital gave an insider’s look into the overall digital strategy and various initiatives SIA has taken – from loyalty and blockchain, to chatbots and new technology – all while continuing to deliver the superior customer experience SIA is renowned for. A dedicated booth at the project showcase also shed light unto how the group adopts an agile mindset with KrisLab, KrisPay and the SQ Mobile App.
Nicholas Lee, Business Development Manager of Tai Yi Tang Pte Ltd who attended the SIA talk shares, "small businesses like ours can learn from larger companies that are leading the digital transformation journey. Ours is a traditional business in manufacturing and we are just starting to leverage on technology. By coming down to Learning Day, it helps to set the mindset and direction towards a smarter future."
Other popular topics at the event include ‘Digital Agility for Organisations – Thriving in Times of Rapid Change’, by Digital Agility Practice Chief, Mr Goh Boon Nam as well as a workshop on ‘Understanding Health & Care Needs through Empathy’ designed by NUS-ISS’s Smart Health Leadership team.

In between talks, participants filled the hall at Learning Day’s Project Showcase as the atmosphere buzzed with intellectual interaction. A highlight was the Singapore National Eye Centre Project, outstandingly done by students from the Master of Technology Software Engineering programme in collaboration with supervisors, to improve SNEC’s work processes with technology. An outcome was the development of an application that would overlay images generated from two types of retinal measurements for overall efficacy.
Other projects include the Fruits Vending membership approach, a clever system that engages customers to purchase fresh orange juice through QR code with the ability to recognise customers, reduce cash transactions and rapidly improve the quality of their business based on customer data and feedback collected.

This year also saw the launch of the new and intuitive NUS-ISS Jobs and Skills portal service that is set to help redefine the way that people look at jobs and skills development for Industry 4.0. Aimed to empower NUS-ISS students, Executive Education Programme participants and Professional Conversion Programme applicants, the portal harnesses on data analytics and artificial intelligence to automatically extract information from the individual’s resumes to create a personal skills blueprint and recommends suitable types of job opportunities and skills they should continue to develop to remain competitive in the market.
After a full day of knowledge sharing, the event winded down to a networking session over good food, a holographic photobooth and live band performance.
