In Sun Tzu’s classic Art of War masterpiece, it opens with a chapter on ‘laying plans’ for what is ahead. Based on ancient Chinese military strategy and philosophy, nuggets of wisdom are privy to all who gloss through the pages of history.
Another reformer from the Warring States period, 361 BC, is Shang Yang, a statesman who achieved breakthroughs in analytics and strategies, leading victorious transformations during his time. His policies laid the administrative and political foundations that would enable Emperor Qin to conquer all of China and unite the country for the first time. He introduced a performance based culture, boosted morale and drove corporate vision, ensuring that it was always about people before strategy.
More than a connective bridge
In modern days, Career Services is front and centre in this people business. It is likened to a bridge to connect an individual to prospective jobs in the workplace through career coaching and guidance. Yet, it encompasses much more than getting from point A to B.
"Career services help students and participants discover their career aspirations and provides them with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate career exploration, planning and job search." |
Today, 80 of the top 100 tech firms in the world have a presence in Singapore and the city state is set to be positioned as Asia’s technology capital. According to the Global Innovation Index, Singapore is also ranked No. 1 in Asia and 7th in the world for innovation.¹ It is hence more vital than ever to zoom in on Singapore’s most in-demand tech jobs and steer through the dos and don’ts of tactical career planning that benefit tech professionals and help one stand out from the crowd.
Did you know?
Majority of professionals will follow a straight line in their career advancement planning, yet in this new era, there too are other ways of looking at one’s career progression. A vertical approach known to many is based on the concept of climbing the corporate ladder and working upwards within the hierarchy of a workplace system.
Horizontal growth adopts a different approach as it hones the underlying growth prospects for the individual and goes beyond career progression or job promotions. It could mean a complete shift into another field as millennials might be open to this sort of career pathway. In recent studies they are more likely to value purpose over paychecks, ethical ways and a job that develops their skills.
