“Digitally, Singapore is one of the most connected nations in the world. We have long embraced infocomm technologies for economic and social development. However reliance on infocomm technologies also makes us vulnerable. Cyber threats and attacks are becoming more sophisticated with more severe consequences. We cannot take cybersecurity for granted.” Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, in his Foreword in Singapore’s Cybersecurity Strategy, 2016.

As financial institutions embrace the digital world, so too have cyber criminals. Malicious cyber activities have evolved in sophistication and stealth and team work would be required to counter this. ICT professionals, not just cybersecurity professionals, need to play their part in helping their organizations protect their assets from ever-pervasive cyber threats.

ICT professionals are subject matter experts in their respective domains (for instance, networking, software development, project management, systems analysis, etc). Supplementing this existing expertise with cybersecurity know-how will allow them to incorporate cybersecurity holistically into their scope of work. This will advance the security-by-design goals of Singapore’s Cybersecurity Strategy and MAS TRM Guidelines.

Key Takeaways

  • Understand the cybersecurity threat landscape, in Singapore and the rest of the world, and the impact to financial institutions.
  • Perform cybersecurity risk assessment and treatment in their area of work, taking into account financial services industry regulations.
  • Apply the correct cryptographic technique to achieve specific security objectives common in financial services.
  • Perform threat modelling.
  • Design a secure network architecture to support financial services.
  • Recommend cybersecurity best practices in their course of work.
  • Understand Incident Preparedness and response.
