The Graduate Certificate in Practical Language Processing (PLP) focuses on the practical application of modern Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to develop intelligent systems that interact with users through natural language. Participants will explore techniques ranging from deep learning and large language models to multimodal and speech technologies, and learn how to apply them to real-world language-enabled applications, such as intelligent virtual assistants and conversational agents.

Designed for software engineers, AI practitioners, data scientists and IT professionals seeking to advance their capabilities in language AI, the programme emphasises hands-on learning and the development of effective, reliable and user-centric solutions. This certificate consists of three component courses and a practice module, providing a comprehensive learning journey from foundational techniques to practical system development.

Objectives

The practice module provides participants with the opportunity to integrate and apply the knowledge and skills acquired from the three component courses to address real-world challenges involving natural language processing and intelligent conversational systems. Participants are expected to demonstrate their ability to analyse problems, select appropriate AI techniques and technologies, and design and develop practical solutions that incorporate text, speech and multimodal language processing capabilities.

The module is entirely project-based, requiring participants to work in teams to design, develop and evaluate an end-to-end language AI system that addresses a real-world problem. Through project implementation, progress reviews, system demonstrations and reporting, participants demonstrate their technical proficiency, problem-solving abilities and capacity to integrate knowledge across the three courses. Assessment considers both team performance and individual contributions, providing a comprehensive evaluation of participants' competencies for certification at the Graduate Certificate level.

Intended Audience

This Practice module is targeted at participants who wish to complete the certification process for the Certificate in “Practical Language Processing”.

Prerequisites

Participants must have successfully completed all the three course modules for the Certificate in Practical Language Processing: Text Processing Using Deep Learning, Building Multimodal Virtual Assistants, and Building Voice-Based Agentic Systems.

Components

The PLP Practice Module is entirely project-based, allowing participants to demonstrate their ability to integrate and apply the skills acquired from the three component courses.

  1. Practice Project: Participants will work in teams to design, develop and evaluate an end-to-end language AI system that addresses a real-world problem. Each participant is expected to expend approximately 15 days of effort, which may be spread over several weeks. The project involves proposal scoping and approval, system design and implementation, progress reviews, testing and evaluation.
  2. Project Deliverables: Each team is required to deliver a working system demonstration, final project presentation and project report. In addition, each participant must submit an individual report documenting their technical contributions, problem-solving experience and reflections on the project.
  3. Assessment and Grading: The overall grade is based entirely on the practice project (100%), comprising 40% team-based assessment (project presentation and report) and 60% individual assessment (individual contribution, technical understanding, reflection and peer assessment). There is no written examination.
